Responding to Local Disasters

While the most well-known aspect of Red Cross disaster relief takes place on major disasters, the Red Cross responds to over 60,000 disasters each year nation wide. The vast majority of these disasters are single family disasters such as house fires. Red Cross also responds to community disasters such as floods and earthquakes. In towns across the country and here in Steuben County, the response to these disasters is provided by groups of volunteers known as Disaster Action Teams

Red Cross helps our community by deploying Disaster Action teams to the scenes of local disasters to:

  • provide specific immediate disaster services on behalf of the American Red Cross to those affected by a disaster.
  • meet the immediate, disaster-caused needs of individuals and families for such things as shelter, food, clothing and other necessary items.
  • inform clients how to access further Red Cross assistance if necessary.
